A short tour of the Romanian Medieval towns

A short tour of the Romanian Medieval towns

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a short presentation film about our country which reminded, among others, that there are over 190 castles and palaces here, some of them being very old and telling old legends and stories from time immemorial. A short tour of the Romanian Medieval towns is what’s in store for today. How about this idea?

Perhaps the most beautiful and best preserved medieval towns in the country can be found in the region Transylvania. The famous (notorious, even) Bran Castle, which was (in an interpretable way) attributed to the legendary Count Dracula, is located here, in Bran, Brasov. But if Bran is an authentic example of medieval architecture, Brasov is also a medieval city itself, built for the most part by the Saxon community centuries ago.

Located about 3 hours’ drive from Bucharest, Brasov is one of the most beautiful destinations, with its cosmopolitan air, the rich Gothic architecture of the Black Church and the promenade around the Council Square. Foreign visitors are often brought to Brasov, as well as Prahova Valley.

But Brasov is definitely not the only medieval city in the country. At the foot of Mount Bargau stretches the beautiful Bistrita city, one of the oldest settlements in the region. Trade was at home here in the 13th century, when Saxon settlers came in the region. The walls of the old citadel, still standing, preserve the medieval town atmosphere until today. Among the tourist attractions you simply can’t miss during a visit to Bistrita, count the Sugalete (an ensemble of 13 beautiful Renaissance buildings), The Andrei Muresanu Memorial House and the Saxon Evangelical Church.

Among the natural beauties, Lake Colibita and the glacier Lala Mare in Mount Rodna are nearby.

In Transylvania, you can enjoy the comfort of a car with Brasov car rental. This way, you can cross the distances easily.
