A short tour of the Romanian Medieval towns 2

Our travels through Transylvania have brought us to dreamy realms, where we listened to tales from times immemorial, like genuine tired and excited visitors. A short tour of the Romanian Medieval towns has brought us first to Brasov and Bistrita, but today we move forward in search of new legendary citadels and beauties.

Almost a millennium ago, the Saxon colonists built important citadels and centers of commerce in Transylvania. Today, the majority of them are important Romanian cities.

In western Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca traces its origins back to the times of Dacia Romanain the second century AD. Recognized as a prominent university and cultural center today, Cluj flourished during the middle ages as an important burg.

The Transylvanian Ethnographic Museum in town is where you can learn more about the charm of the long lost medieval times, but also about the inter-cultural life in the region of Cluj. St. Michael’s Church was built in the 15th century and still towers over the central square. Banffy Palace, a baroque building of the 18th century, houses some of the most interesting Romanian weapons, while the Arts Museum preserves an impressive collection of paintings.

With its rich architecture, Western atmosphere and proud history, Cluj is a must-see in Romania! Just as it is worth visiting the medieval city of Sebes, old center of the Transylvanian Diet from the 16th to the 18th century. As most Saxon towns, Sebes used to be an important fair and strategic point. Among the main attractions, it is worth visiting the 12th century Evangelical Church, the 14th century Fortress and the Zapolya House.
