Tourist Destinations – Curtea de Arges

Built by the Arges River, Curtea de Arges benefits from a breathtaking panorama over the sub-Carpathian hills. The city is one of the most important spots in Muntenia, due to its rich history and wealth of tourist attractions.

The setting has a long history, as archeological research has shown that the area has been inhabited ever since the iron age by a Dacian population. The Dacians, ruled by Dromichaites, lived here between the centuries 7 and 3 BC. Research has also shown that the seat of a local voivodeship existed here in the 13th century, as well as a small church.

Seneslau was the name of the voivode, as attested by the diploma of the Ioanit Knights. However, the city was first documented on October 17th 1336 in a Hungarian diploma, under the name of “Castro-Argyas”. The former name of the city was Agres, but it started going by the name of Curtea de Arges in the 14th century; the name first appeared in script in 1510.
