In recent years, after we entered the European Union, we have been able to travel outside the borders of our country to places we had only dreamed of before. In reverse, however, Romanian tourism has been somewhat neglected: we travel too little inside Romania and we know our country too little. Don’t you think? In the following, we wish to present a few tourist attractions in Iasi, meant to convince you it is well worth visiting local destinations.
Iasi County is one of the most interesting places in Romania and its capital city, Iasi, is the second in size after Bucharest. Set in the field between Siret and Prut rivers, this Moldavian county is intensely populated by residents and visited by travelers for its countless tourist attractions.
Here are a few tourist attractions in Iasi:
Bucium Monastery – built in the 18th century (at that time, being a small hermitage), it was consecrated in the next century. Today, it is one of the seats of the Iasi Archdiocese and attracts countless travelers daily. They are coming here for a moment of quiet and spirituality. Apart from the Metropolitan Cathedral, Bucium Monastery is one of the most important places of worship in the city.
The Botanical Garden in Iasi is an attraction you cannot miss. Built in 1856 in the personal yard of Anastasie Fatu, it was the first botanical garden in Romania and has remained the largest in the country until today. It is much more than a park: here, you can find The St. Atanasie Church, built by ruler Vasile Lupu in 1638, springs and greenhouses with countless species of tropical and carnivorous plants, cactuses and roses. (The “Rosary” hosts over 800 species of roses.)
Outside the city, you are invited to visit the Sturdza Castle in Miclauseni, built at the end of the 19th century in the neo gothic style by nobleman Gheorghe Sturza and his wife Maria.
In Mircesti, you will visit the Vasile Alecsandri Memorial House, built in the 1860’s according to the personal plans of the great poet and scholar.
Parks, forests, churches, museums and others are the tourist attractions in Iasi, all of which you can visit with a rented car.
