The tourist attractions of Slatina

There is little talk of Slatina as a tourist center, and yet the tourist attractions of Slatina city and its surroundings deserve our attention and more promotion.

Dominated by the Olt river, the destiny of Slatina, county capital, has been surprising. Due to the favorable factors (climate, relief, waters, flora and fauna), human settlements have appeared and flourished here since time immemorial (apparently, they were present during the Paleolithic, a million years ago).

During antiquity, the region was an important center of commerce during the Gets and the Greek and Macedonian world. In the Middle Ages, the city is first mentioned in an official document in 1368. The modern age consecrates the development of Slatina – the old borough on the Olt. Many buildings from the 19th century have been preserved: Ionascu Cathedral, Grand Hotel Regal and the Minerva Pastry are just a few of these buildings, included in the UNESCO world heritage.

In Slatina, you can visit the Museum of Etnography – a relatively new institution, open since the year 1997. Silk fabrics, ceramics and the national attire are just a few of the exhibited pieces you can admire here. The Olt County Museum is also located in Slatina and talks of all the civilizations that have ever walked these lands.

Some 40 km away from Slatina, it is worth visiting a town that speaks of the age of Michael the Brave. You can go to the Royal Court of Caracal’s Ruins, the place where the royal residence of Matei Basarab, Constantin Brancoveanu and Michael the Brave was located.

First mentioned in a document dating back to 1582-1583, Brancoveni Monastery is a symbol of Romanian Orthodoxy. The St. Nicholas Church and the rest of the monastic ensemble are found in the town of Brancoveni in Olt County.

We hope to have managed to convince you that it is worth visiting all the attractions of Slatina. To make sure you have an even better experience, we invite you to rent a car in Slatina.
