It’s worth visiting Deva!

Today, we suggest taking a short trip through one of the oldest towns in the country, mentioned in a 1269 document and the capital of Hunedoara County. It’s worth visiting Deva!

Deva city is an oasis of quiet and beauty, an establishment engendered in the picturesque beauty between Mount Poiana Rusca and Apuseni. The mining riches, both metals and gold, of the surrounding mountains, as well as the green pastures and the temperate climate have favored the development of the city along the centuries.

Ethnically, the population of Deva has a vast Romanian majority (of around 80%), but also a Magyar minority of around 8%. Perhaps the best known local personality is Dr. Petru Groza, prime-minister of Romania in the post-war period.

From the tourist point of view, Deva presents countless important objectives. Perhaps the most popular among these is the Deva Citadel, reconstructed starting with the 9th century upon the ruins of an old Daco-Roman fortress. Along the middle ages, the Citadel has been an important redoubt, defending the country against the Tatar invasion. Royal residence since 1307, Deva Citadel became a nobiliary castle in 1453, during the time of Iancu de Hunedoara. After a long and turbulent history, the Citadel is a popular tourist destination today.

Also in Deva, if you wish to take a quiet walk outdoors, you can choose the Bejan Forest, a protected Natural Reservation, situated in the Micro 15 neighborhood. You can admire the most interesting oak tree varieties here. The nature and botanics lovers should also consider visiting the Dealul Colt and Dealul Zanoaga Natural Reservations, as well as the Deva Hill.

The old town center is a popular promenade, where you can enjoy a scented coffee or a romantic dinner, while watching the quiet life of the city unravel before your eyes. Deva Theatre can offer you a cultural evening, while for an entertaining weekend, you are invited to Aqualand Deva.

Far from us the thought of ruining your surprise, in case you wish to visit the town! All we can say is, it is all worth it and, to travel around town swiftly, you can rent a car in Deva online, even without a deposit!
