Drivers who break the traffic rules in their own country must also pay attention while driving inside the European Union, because according to the new UE dispositions, he fines resulting from traffic offenses abroad will be sent to them home by mail.
The purpose of these EU dispositions is increasing traffic safety on EU roads. Here are the eight offenses you must take care not to make while driving on the territory of European Union member states:
– speeding, depending on the legislation applicable in the respective state
– driving under the influence of alcohol
– driving under the influence of drugs
– ignoring to use the safety belt or the safety devices for children
– ignoring to use the safety helmet by motorcyclists
– crossing the red light
– using a prohibited traffic lane
– using the phone without a hands-free device
As for the fine that the “international” driver is liable to receive, this is the one applicable in the state where the offense was committed. If, for instance, a Romanian driver speeds in Germany, he will be sanctioned according to the laws functioning in Germany.
So how can the driver at fault be found? Simple: through the EU database, which contains information on all the registered vehicles. Therefore, it is possible to send a fine to the exact address of the driver.
There is a chance that an offense had been committed by a person driving a car he does not own. The fine is sent to the address of the person owning the car. Nevertheless, according to the law no. 5/2014, the vehicle owner can indicate the name of the driver responsible of having committed the offence by replying to the informative email. This way, the fine will be resent to the address of the culprit.
The European Commission is responsible with offering drivers information on the speed limits, allowed amount of alcohol in the blood, use of the safety devices, etc. for each EU state.
