It is often said that Romania is still a predominantly rural country, that life here equals the life of the village. Surely, this aspect is often mentioned in the West in a rather negative context, but many of these same Westerners who come to visit these realms get to fall in love with the timeless quality of the eternal village.
We have been talking about the most beautiful villages in the country for quite some time. Instead, today we are going to switch focus: The most beautiful villages in Romania make up our topic.
In Timisoara, we can visit a village (or, after the locals’ language, a “dorf”) which is utterly beautiful and unique: Charlottenburg, the only round village in Romania, founded by the Saxon collonists in 1771. Charlottenburg (or Sarlota in Romanian) was built in a circle, around the church. The first well was also built here, also in a circle, as well as the school. These beautiful and bizarre place is certainly worth a visit!
If you fell in love with the magical world of J.R.R. Tolkien, a visit to Sirnea, in Brasov County, is in order. Built at the foot of the Piatra Craiului mountain, Sirnea became the first tourist village in Romania in 1960. The most interesting event that takes place here is the Sumedru Fire, a tradition reminding of the ancient pagan Dacians.
Also in Brasov, you can spend a day in Dragusu – also known as the Village of Dragons. This village is a perfect destination both in summer and during the winter time. In summer, you can stroll along the winding streets or spend an exciting day at the Aventura Park, while on a winter’s day you have a wonderful skiing slope at your disposal to practice your favorite winter sports. 24 km away, you can visit Fagaras and its castle, while just 9 km from the village, there is the Sambata de Sus Monastery to admire.
And guess what the perfect way of touring the most beautiful rural areas in Romania is: Car rental without deposit is the answer. The booking can be done online in just a couple of minutes.
