Piatra Craiului National Park has a total surface of 14.800 hectares, spreading thrughout Brasov and Argres counties.
Piatra Craiului takes pride in the most spectacular landscape on its limestone peak in the country, a view that unfolds over a length of 25 km. It is bordered by the Barsa river, the Dambovita valley, Dambovicioara spring, the Bran hills, Magura village and Sirnea cave.
Piatra Craiului is located across the general line of the Meridional Carpathian Mountains and is often compared to the back of a dinosaur. Geologically, the mountain is made up of a compact mass of limestone reefs 175 million years old. Thanks to these morphological features, the area has favored the emergence of different natural phenomena, such as the Dambovicioara Hills and the Brusturelui Hills, 5 km long, with walls 200 meters high. Also worth mentioning are the Dambovicioara cave, the Zarnestilor Precipices, as well as the Funduri and Vladusca potholes and Pestera cu Lilieci (The Bat Cave).
Due to the limestone composition of the mountains, they form true rivers of debris, the largest of which, ‘Marele Grohotis’, is 4 km long.
The Park is also the home of many protected species. When it comes to the flora: the edelweiss, the yellow ghintura, the mountain bubbles, sweet pea, the simirad, the tisa, the white ivy and the Piatra Craiului carnation. As for animals, we should mention: the chamois, the lynx, the mountain rooster, the eagle and the trout.
The pathways are marked and the tourists will find refuge, as well as lodgings, in the cabins and houses in the area. The mountain addicts tend to go a lot to the town of Zarnesti: starting point when they want to conquer the Piatra Craiului Massif. But there are other places of interest: the Podu Dambovitei Village, the Moeciu de Jos Commune, as well as Pestera Village.
