Again, we talk about Romanian Tourist Destinations: Sulina is the most Eastern Romanian point and represents a unique space, where the waters of the Danube meet the Black Sea. It is a mixture of water and cane at the heart of which there is a strip of sand where people have decided to settle.
As a tourist destination, Sulina is ideal if you are searching for relaxation, the city being very popular during the summer season, people being attracted by the beach and the fishing, as well as by the general atmosphere of the place.
Sulina City is situated on the “newest” European soil, being also the most Eastern Romanian settlement, one of the frontieres of the country and the last town along the Danube. Sulina has another unique quality, that of being the only port to the Danube as well as the Black Sea.
Tourist Attractions in Sulina
The Palace of the former European Commission of the Danube – this is the most imposing building in the city, dating back to 1866, constructed in a neoclassical style. As the name suggests, this is where the European Commission of the Danube used to function. It is located on I Street, next to the quai where cruise ships dock.
The lighthouses of Sulina
– The lighthouse on the northern pier dates back to 1887 and is located on the left shore of the river. Today it does not function anymore, but it is worth mentioning that most of the movies of the series ‘Toate panzele sus’ have been shot here.
– The central lighthouse started working in 1870 and is a museum today.
– The lighthouse on the southern pier is a metal construction measuring 11.6 m in height.
– The landing lighthouse – or the “new” lighthouse – is situated near the edge of the piers of the Sulina channel, on the right side of the shore. It measures 50 m in height and its light is visible from a distance of 19 nautical miles – some 35 km. It is operational and represents the navigation landmark at the entrance of Sulina channel.
The maritime cemetery and many beautiful churches are also worth mentioning and, of course, visited. This can all be accomplished if you rent a car to drive everywhere you desire.
