Tourist destinations – Ciucas Mountains

ciucas mountains

When dealing with Romanian tourist attractions, we talk much about the seaside, about the sea and the sun, but there are many those who prefer to go into the mountains for their summer holidays, and today we get to talk a bit about the Ciucas Mountains for a change.

 Ciucas Mountains are the most Southern region of the Oriental Carpathians and cover a surface of around 200 square km. Their surface has been heavily marked by the passing of time, age and the natural phenomena leaving deep traces such as: Tigaile Mari, Tigaile Mici, Mana Dracului, Babele la Sfat or Turnul lui Goliat.

Ciucas Mountains are irrigated by the Teleajen River and the Berii Plow, and the Ciucas peak is accessible from several directions. But let us focus on the most important tourist attractions in the mountains.

– The Tigaile Mari Peak has a length of 1844 meters and is made up of towers that can reach 100 meters in height, traces left behind by the periglacial age.
– The Tigaile Mici peak has a height of 1843 meters and is the highest peak in the Bratocei Ridge; some publications also call it Bratocea Peak, giving it a height of 1827 meters;
– Mana Dracului is an extremely difficult mountain path, well deserving of its name – in translation: ‘The hand of the devil’.
– Babele la Sfat is a cluster of short mountains that, looking from afar, appear to be a group of old ladies chatting;
– Turnul lui Goliat – also named Mosul cu Oile (The Tower of Goliath/ The Old Shepard) is a group of mountains of different sizes, at the center of which there is a high mountain.

The Natural Reservation Ciucas Mountains also harbors rare fauna and flora, and here you can find blackberries, junipers, green sedge and the edelweiss; among the protected animal species, we should mention the bear, the marte, the linx, the chamois and the mountain eagle.
