The Christmas celebration and the days off are not the only happy times brought about by the month of December: this snow white period also brings enthusiasm into the lives of winter sports fans. Skiing is one of the most popular winter sporting activities, along with sledging. But in order to practice sports safely and organized, certain logistics are necessary.
Benefitting from an extended mountain area, Romania enjoys vast popularity during the winter season. Unfortunately, the necessary infrastructure for practicing winter sports is rather modest: only 150 homologated sloes adding up to a total of 135 km.
The best skiing slopes in Romania can be found especially in the region of Brasov, on Prahova Valley and in Vatra Dornei. The biggest slope in the country is Drumul Rosu in Poiana Brasov and measures almost 5 km in length. The famous slope in Brasov is followed by Sulinar (3.3 km), situated in the vicinity, also in Poiana Brasov.
The third place is occupied by the Dealul Negru slope, in Vatra Dornei. Measuring 3000 meters, it is the most important slope in Suceava and recognized center of sporting events. In Prahova, you will find slopes in Sinaia, on Mount Furnica, in Busteni and Azuga. You can also enjoy your favorite winter sports in In Maramures, Hunedoara and Bihor.
At the other end of the scale, the smallest slope in the country is Gondola in Prahova (in the Bucegi Massif). It measures 150 meters.
Among the most popular mountain resorts, we have Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal, Azuga and Poiana Brasov. Straja in Hunedoara is also on the list. Here are the counties that top the number of slopes. Prahova occupies the first place, with its 23 slopes, closely followed by Harghita (no less than 22 pieces) and Brasov (20). Skiing and sledging can also be prasticed in Maramures, Hunedoara, Sibiu and not only.
You can travel to any of these mountain destinations if you rent a car for the winter holiday.
