Focsani, a city with a surprising history

The month of June is here with sun and warmth, which means summer has finally settled; which in turn means we can plan outings and vacations with no restraint. In this context, you will surely find use in any suggestion. Today, we would like to invite you on you on tour of Focsani, a city with a surprising history.

The county residence, biggest and perhaps most thriving city in Vrancea, Focsani is a realm that harbors more mysteries than one would guess at first glance. The history of Moldova is at home in Focsani, the old fair full of memories that stretches between the rivers Milcov and Putna.

Inhabited ever since the neolithic age, Focsani is first attested in a document of the 16th century. Back then, it was no more than a village, but a rich and important one, as recorded during the following centuries. During the time of Al. I. Cuza, Focsani becomes prominent, housing the Central Commission – meant to elaborate laws for Moldavia and Walachia – the Court of Cassation, two courthouses, two prefectures, police and two municipal departments.

The greatest cultural development is witnessed during the coming decades, when many institutions were established here: The Gymnasium (1866), the Municipal Hospital (1867), the Philharmonic House (1907), the Public Library (1912). In 1917, the truce between Romania and the Central Powers is signed in town. During the communist regime, Foscani undergoes an intense plan of urbanization and industrialization. Blocks of flats, factories and plants are erected and in 1968, Focsani becomes the capital city of the county of Vrancea.

Today, Focsani remains an important city, as well as a prominent cultural center. Among the places you can visit here, we should list: the Heroes Mausoleum, the Natural Science Museum and the Museum of Vrancea. As an alternative, you can opt for a cultural evening at the Mr. Gh. Pastia Theatre.

An absolutely enchanting natural destination nearby is the Black Lake (Lacul Negru) situated at an altitude of over 1.200 m, which you can reach with Focsani car rental if you cross DJ 205D.
