Targu Mures, the capital city and largest municipality of Mures County is at the crossroads of various cultures and ethnic groups. It is the sixth city in size in Transylvania. A large number of important tourist attractions deserve our attention, both the ones in Targu Mures and the destinations around the city.
The Medieval Citadel attracts romantic tourists and travelers interested in history, both from the country and from abroad. It was built in the 17th century on the ruins of a castle owned by the ruler Bathori Istvan, erected at the end of the 15th century and destroyed by the Turkish invasion in 1601. The Medieval Citadel in Targu Mures was a veritable fortress, with an 8 meters deep and 10 meters wide ditch, with 7 bastions dedicated to the trades (shoemakers, locksmiths, tailors, furriers, butchers, tailors). The Citadel includes a Reformed Church.
Targu Mures is home to different nationalities, so their religions are democratically represented. There are Catholic, Reformed and Orthodox churches. The Wooden Church was built between 1793 and 1794 with a shingle roof. The interior and iconostasis were accomplished in 1814 by Bon Vasile and Popa Nicolae. The Teleki Library was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the Count and European scientist Teki Samuel. It was the first public library in Romania. The patrimony of the library includes the 40.000 volumes of the Teleki collections, the Bolyai collection (80.000) and 90.000 volumes donated by the Reformed College.
