Tourist Destinations – Bucovina County

Bucovina region is well known to the Romanian people to a large extent due to the tradition of painting eggs that has been refined into a true art. For the locals, Bucovina remains a realm of traditions and natural riches, but also a holy land of dozens of churches and convents that populate the Sub-Carpathian hills, guarding the Moldavian soil.

Bucovina has been inhabited since time immemorial, archeological diggings in Suceava, Bosanci, Silistea Scheii, etc. having unveiled the ruins of cities, churches, houses and 96 graves in Zvoristea.

Bucovina has been very popular due to the pilgrimages organized around the monasteries in the area. The tradition of pilgrimages began ever since the days of the Turkish invasions, when thousands of priests sought refuge in the Carpathian Mountains. As a result of this population movement, many holy ecclesiastical settlements appeared during the 15th to 17th centuries.

Manastirea Dragomirna – Dragomirna Monastery is situated 10 km away from SUceava, having been built by the Head of the Church of Moldavia between 1602-1609. It was built in a classical Moldavian style and is imposing in size. The monastery remained open even during the communist regime, one of the few to receive visitors in those times. Today, the nuns manage a hotel that can accommodate many tourists and pilgrims.

Manastirea Humor – Humor Monastery is located 5 km away from Campulung Moldovenesc and was built in 1530 by the chancellor Toader Buboiog for Petru Rares. A special characteristic of the monastery is the exterior painting that shows the family tree of Jesus.

Manastirea Voronet – Voronet Monastery is famous for its blue painting that bares its name. It was founded by Stephan the Great and it was built in the summer of 1488. The roof has the shape of a tent, to prevent the snow and the water from dripping over the walls and to fade the colours of the walls.

There are countless tourist attractions to be explored in Bucovina, so do not hesitate to rent a car in order to visit them.
