Sapte Scari Canyon (The Seven Steps Canyon) is the name given to a Jurassic limestone gate carved in the western side of the Piatra Mare Mountains, in Brasov County. The canyon is made up of a series of gorges carved in limestone, with a total length of 160 meters and a level difference of 50 meters, all the ensemble being positioned at a height of 948 meters.
The name “Sapte Scari” (Seven Stairs) cines from the 7 cascades formed as the slope tore. They represent and preserve the traces of recent morphological evolution of the entire massif. They are regarded by many as the most spectacular gorges in the entire region of the Piatra Mare Massif.
Along with the Tamina Canyon, Sapte Scari Canyon represents the main tourist objective offered by the Piatra Mare Massif, a unique place in Romania.
The steps have heights varying from 2.5 to 15 meters, turning into cascades when the water volume of the Sapte Scari River is elevated. The tallest cascade measures 35 meters, the water loudly cascading in the abyss, hitting the steep walls whose heights exceed 50 meters.
Along the first four steps, the water changes course six times, the curves being parallel, thus explaining the diaclases of the limestones.
The entire path is fit with metal stairs and floors, but even these have to be walked carefully, as that the torrential floods decay constantly.
The shortest and safest way to reach the Canyon Sapte Scari is through Timisu de Jos, a tourist area known as Dambu Morii, almost 2 km away from Brasov. From here, there is a path marked with a yellow band following which you can reach the Canyon in less than an hour; its crossing lasts around half an hour.
Do not forget to take into consideration our Rent A Car Brasov services to easily visit the canyon.
