A cultural destination, Baia Mare

A cultural destination, Baia Mare

Our foreign friends fell in love with Romania on their first visit, so they have been returning here every summer, drawn by what we have come to take for granted: the small towns, the mundane life of the villages, old archeological sites or buildings from other times. Though a bit “shabby” in appearance, these are what render the specific atmosphere of Romania. For their first visit, we took our “Westerners” to the very popular tourist destinations: Bucharest, Brasov, Prahova Valley, then we went to the seaside, in Mamaia. But this year, we would like to explore other regions of the country, less known, but just as relevant, among which we wish to travel to a cultural destination, Baia Mare.

Baia Mare, the capital city of Maramures county, is in our opinion one of the least appreciated destinations in the country. Come to think about it, this is illogical, since there are so many things to see here! Here are a few of them:

Did you think the Village Museum can only be found in the Capital? Well, think again: yes, in Baia Mare there is an outdoors museum with the same specific and the same name. Here is the place where you can admire a great variety of wonderful traditional houses from four etnographic regions in the north of the country: Tara Lapusului, Tara Codrului, Tara Chioarului and Tara Maramuresului.

In the History and Archeology County Museum, on the other hand, you will learn all there is to be learnt about Transylvania.

One of the symbols of Baia Mare is Stephen’s Tower, the belfry of the old church built in the 15th century.

Opened in 1969, the Planetarium was the first of its sort in our country and the only one in Transylvania.

The Theater is also at home in Baia Mare, with offers both for adults – the Municipal Theater – and for the little ones – the Puppet Theater.

You can book with Baia Mare car rental to enjoy a trip in town and its surroundings.
