We have a daring plan for this summer: to travel throughout the entire country – or at least to see the most important centers in each region. So today we would be happy to review the best events and tourist attractions in Timisoara.
According to the last census, Timisoara is the third city in Romania in terms of population. It is the county capital and largest city of Timis. The old citadel was erected in the 6th century by the Visigoths and subsequently conquered by the Pechenegs and the Wallachians. Long ago, Timisoara Citadel was surrounded by swamps that kept it protected, but also preserved a damp and unhealthy air. The situation would change dramatically from the 18th century on, when the swamps were dried and Timisoara becomes a thriving city and an important cultural and economic center.
Among the main cultural and tourist attractions in Timisoara, a prominent place is occupied by the Banat Museum, opened in 1872, divided in several sections that cover arts, ethnography, music, technology and communications. The largest collection of butterflies and birds in Eastern Europe is also part of the museum’s heritage.
Theatrical art has a rich history in Timisoara, being represented by its three state institutions: the National Theatre, the German Theatre and the Magyar Theatre. There is also a Puppet Theatre for the little ones.
In Timisoara, you can enjoy visiting one of the many galleries and the locals have the choice of countless courses to attend.
Summer is a very active time of year in Timisoara. Jazz TM starts on July 3rd and will welcome prominent artists on stage. Exit Oz, Guillaume Perret and Him will also give concerts in July and on July 18th, you are invited to watch a projection of the Maastricht 2015 concert of Andre Rieu in case you haven’t managed to attend any of his June concerts in Bucharest.
