Romania harbors a spectacular culture, which is the conclusion that foreigners coming here to visit reach. It also boasts with beautiful castles and palaces that can be visited for very accessible prices. In Hunedoara, for instance, you must make a stop at the Corvin Castle. It is also called the Hunyadi Castle and is considered to be one of the most magnificent medieval castles in the world and a fairytale destination in Europe.

John of Hunedoara built the castle in the 15th century on a great cliff bathed by the waters of the Zlasti River. The Romanian ruler of Transylvania and regent of Hungary constructed a marvelous castle that would be remodeled and restored by his descendants until reaching its current form.

There is a legend that talks of the symbol of the castle – and that of the Corvin House, actually – the raven with a ring in its beak. John was said to be the illegitimate son of Sigismund of Luxembourg, the king of Hungary. The king protected his beloved and his son and gave them a ring to be recognized when John grew up and came to claim his throne. During a journey, the ring is forgotten on a flag under which the picnic food was kept and a raven steals it. The child John hits the raven with an arrow and recovers the ring. Upon hearing this tale, the king is impressed and decides to name the family Corvin (from the Latin word “corvus”, raven).
