Romanian Castles: Peles Castle

Romanian Castles: Peles Castle

A new day smiles upon us and we are back to talking about the most beautiful of all Romanian Castles: Peles Castle is today’s subject. Let’s explore it!

Built between 1873 and 1914, Peles Castle just might be the most beautiful cultural legacy of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Built in Sinaia on Prahova Valley, in the green and fresh surroundings of the river with the same name (Peles), the castle is one of the most beautiful baroque buildings in Europe and the entire world. King Charles I wanted to build a summer residence. The architects who worked on the construction of Peles were the German artists Carol Benesch, Johannes Schultz and Karel Liman. The interior design was accomplished by Austrian and German artists August Bembe, Heymann and Bernhard Ludwig.

Today, the palace is a museum. Tourists can enjoy a walk in the open air through the interior gardens of the castle, taking a refreshing breath of air on the terrace or by the fountain with baroque statues or they can take pictures by the equestrian statues without having to pay a dime. For about 45 lei, you can enter the museum and have a full tour. You will admire various rooms, like the Room of Arms, the Music Hall, the Hall of Honor, the Royal Library, bedrooms and the imposing interior staircase. On the first floor, you will get a beautiful panoramic view over the entire confines of the ground floor. Children and students enjoy important discounts. The price is not very high for the beauty of this important historical monument.

Peles Castle is the second most sought after tourist destination for foreigners coming to Romania (after the famous Bran Castle). Thousands of visitors cross its threshold every year. Some find lodgings in Ploiesti, the county residence of Prahova and a prominent cultural and economic center. Here, you can get a vehicle from Ploiesti rent a car and enjoy an elegant drive everywhere in the country.
