Tourist Destinations – Sibiu

Located at the heart of the Saxon Transylvania, Sibiu now occupies the place that used to designate one of the largest medieval citadels in the country. In 2007, the city enjoyed massive international publicity, as it was elected as European Cultural Capital City, alongside Luxemburg.

The existence of Sibiu is due to the Saxon colonists that were invited to settle in the region by the Hungarian kings that sought to take control over Transylvania as fst and as effectively as possible. The migration of these colonists visibly increased the life standard in the region and created a new civilization at the heart of Transylvania. What they also brought along were new trades, as the place represented a great outlet for commerce.

Throughout history, Sibiu has been the epitome of the harmonious cohabitation of three major cultures: Roman, Hungarian and German; to this, other minorities were added. Thanks to its geographical proximity to Wallachia and Moldavia, as well as to the strong Germanic influences, the whole local culture and monuments was influenced, becoming a mixture of Byzantine and Orthodox elements.

Currently, Sibiu is a very well preserved medieval city, displaying a wide variety of tourist objectives that can be easily reached if you employ some reliable rent a car services!
