Maramures County has been many a time listed among the most beautiful and offering tourist areas in Romania, so today we invite you to join us as we take one step closer towards the heart of a fairy-tale realm and plan a winter trip to Maramures.
Far away, “where one hangs the map”, you will find the balneoclimateric resort Ocna Sugatag, on the spot where an old salt mine used to stand, surrounded by 8 lakes, forests and relics of a mythical time. You are invited to visit Biserica de Lemn (the Wooden Church), as well as the natural reservations Taul Morarenilor and Padurea Craiasa.
Many of those looking for treatment in Ocna choose to turn to the warm mineral water basins in Baile Noi, but also Baile Vechi, an old rehabilitated balnear lake with salty water.
Only half an hour’s drive, you can visit Sighetu Marmatiei, where those of you who are into cultural trips can choose to explore the museums in town. The old terrifying prison in Sighet, where the Romanian elites were imprisoned and exterminated by the communist regime is now a museum and can be visited. For those of you in search of a peaceful place, in Sighetu Marmatiei you can also visit the Museum of the Maramures Village (Muzeul Satului Maramuresan), an outdoors monument to ethnography, where you can learn everything about the history, traditions and architecture of the rural world here.
The Memorial House Casa-Muzeu Dr. Ioan Mihalyi de Apsa and the Museum of Maramures Ethnography (Muzeul Etnografic al Maramuresului) are also tourist interest points in the town. Hebrew culture is also treasured in Sighetu Marmatiei, where you can visit the beautiful Synagogue and the Museum of Jewish Culture (Muzeul Culturii Evreiesti).
An expedition in the mountains is also an excellent option, and Mount Tibles-Gutai nearby has unexpected beauties to unveil.
A winter trip to Maramures is made possible if you rent a car in Romania or book an online transfer in Romania. As always, we encourage you to travel as much as possible and to enjoy every moment of respite!
