Buzau, the city of amber

The wise man takes the time to plan things – for instance, their vacations. Following this piece of advice, the modern person has learned to travel during the low season or at least to plan for the summer holidays in winter.

A relatively underappreciated tourist destination in Romania is closer to the capital city than the usual lengths we have traveled before. We have all heard about the mud volcanoes and the living fires that are local “brands”, but today we suggest discovering Buzau, the city of amber.

Buzau county (as well as its homonymous city), is a fascinating region, strange and magical from many points of view, home to a bunch of curiosities. Amber is a less known aspect; nevertheless, in Colti town, in the Curvature Carpathians, there is a protected natural reservation where you can find the area that is richest in amber.

Amber is in fact fossilized tree resin, very hard and turned to precious stone. Transparent or opaque, amber is very popular when it comes to decorating jewels.

According to attested documents, amber had already been discovered in 1578, when Mihnea Voda donated a door with amber engravings to the Church in Alunis. A more scientific approach is offered by the Russian count Drmidov in the year 1837, when he attested the presence of amber in the mountains. The exploitation per se was only begun towards the end of the 19th century just to end in the 1980s.

In Buzau, inColti, you can visit the little Amber Museum. Here, you have the opportunity to learn more about the mysterious precious stones that can be found in 160 different colours and varieties in the area of Buzau. This is also the place to buy amber in dofferent beautiful shapes, especially since the prices are very accessible.
