Why do people travel? Many will tell you stories about personal development, new experiences and the challenge to get around in an intercultural context. But an aspect we cannot ignore is that thousands of people travel for the culinary pleasures. Romanian cuisine is popular among foreigners and locals alike, so today we will focus on a few of the most appreciated Romanian traditional dishes.
In recent years, agritourism has developed particularly and the people have started to appreciate the wild beauty of virgin areas, where the air is fresh and the people are simple. Thus, foreigners have started to discover Romania, presided by the greatest “fan”: the Prince of Wales – who appreciates the nature, the architecture and… the food in our country.
Rhubarb jam is one of the favorite sweets of the Price, and his neighbours from Viscri village (where Prince Charles owns several traditional cottages) supply him with the elixir that is said to improve immunity and prolong the life of the person who consumes it.
Apple pie is one of Romania’s favorite desserts: simple and tasty. It is also easy to prepare: you need dough, grated apple, sugar and one egg. In a tray, divide the dough in sheets and apply the apples in layers, add sugar ,cinnamon or other flavorings, then bake it for 45 minutes at 160 degrees.
Sarmale (or cabbage rolls) with meat or with vegetables are legendary. The meat (or vegetables) are boiled for about 30 minutes. Before boiling, the content (meat and vegetables or rice and vegetables) is heated in a pan and condiments are added. It is then served with mamaliga (which is made of corn).
So what more can we say? We warmly invite you to travel throughout Romania and to taste all the local delicacies of this unique cuisine!
