Top Castles to visit in Romania – Lapusna Castle

Today, we continue our journey through autochthonous tourist attractions, and we`re going to talk about Lapusna Castle.

Situated in a splendid mountain area, 815 m height, in the Commune Ibanesti, Lapusna Village, Lapusna Castle is located 70 km away from Targu Mures and 45 km away from Reghin, in the Gughiu Mountains, down the omonimous valley.

Lapusna Castle

The castle was built between 1925-1926 and belonged – as is the case for most castles – to the kings of Romania – Ferdinand, Charles II and Michael I – until 1949.

Lapusna Castle was nationalized in 1949, becoming property of the state under the administration of Ibanesti. During the communist rule, the castle was open under the name of “Presidential House”, obviously. More accurately, it served as a “Hunting Manor” for the communist elite and the presidential entourage.

Another great tourist attraction nearby is the Lapusna Monastery, dating back to 1779 – a wooden construction, which was brought here all the way from Comori Village to serve as place of prayer for the Royal House. When the church was moved, it was transferred here together with its icons – which attest a strong bond between Transylvania and Moldavia of the XVIIIth century.

Today, Lapusna Castle is a sort of “exotic” destination for tourists all around the country, especially for those looking to spend the holidays in Mures county, in the mountains.

Due to its setting, it offers quiet and makes it an ideal tourist destination, much appreciated by those seeking to spend a few days away from the whole world.
