Our country offers a wide variety of tourist destinations, we have already talked about so many cities and resorts, but today we are going to focus on a more special attraction, none the less attractive though: the bats cave in Moeciu.
The Bats Cave
The bats cave harbors rare species of bats, so rare in fact that specialists consider the cave should be kept away from the prying eyes of the tourist to protect these specimens. However, the cave is open for visit and is considered a natural monument, being recorded among the zone of with the highest degree of protection of the “Piatra Craiului” park.
The Bats Cave holds a great historical significance , being the one that named the village it is located in – Pestera (The Cave).Wherever in Moeciu you might find yourself, the locals will be sure to direct you towards the cave. Though it has not been specially preserved, it represents an important tourist objective in the area.
The cave can be found at an altitude of 950 m, on the Bran platform, being attested a few centuries ago. It was formed through a process of erosion by an afluent of the Valea cu Cale river. The access into the heart of the lair of the bats is done through a narrow path.
The main cave is 162 m long and has a gallery of 109 m. The total surface is 1.5 hectares and is home to countless species of bats, researched along the years by specialists in speleology.
The grotto is divided in several rooms whose ceiling is of a different color, and the climate inside is mainly warm and moderately humid. If you wish to visit the cave, we recommend you bring protection equipment along, as well as a lantern, because there is a water leak inside and it`s very muddy.
How to get to the Bats Cave
As you enter Moeciu, all you need to do is follow the highway that turns right to Pestera Village. The village and the cave are marked by a traffic indicator, but if you are having doubts, do not hesitate to ask the locals. The cave can be easily reached with a rented car.
