Sighisoara Citadel has been one of the most mysterious medieval citadels in Transylvania; today, it represents a genuine historical monument, preserving the emotion of connecting with the distant past. The visitors of the citadel discover a world of unparalleled charm – as they have for centuries already.
Sighisoara today is still one of the most beautiful citadels in Europe thanks to the great extent to which it has been preserved – actually, it is one of the few places to remain intact, just as they used to stand under the sun a few centuries ago. The medieval houses here are still inhabited today.
Sighisoara is a Saxon establishment first attested by a document from 1298. The city was founded somewhere in the 12th century.
The citadel has 9 towers, the most representative being the Tower with the Clock (Turnul cu Ceas) – the initial purpose of which was to stand as the main gate of the city. For centuries, the city hall and magistracy were established here.
The medieval atmosphere could not be complete without the buildings of the guilds of craftsmen in Sighisoara – there were 19 guilds, who received their status in 1976, being based on very well established ancient rules and customs.
The city is second in size and importance in Mures and no journey in the region can be complete without a visit to Sighisoara.
The city frequently celebrates its historical legacy, especially the medieval one, organizing a medieval fair every summer, meant to bring back – at least for a short time, in a slightly more modern context – the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
For three days, from Friday to Sunday, Sighisoara returns to its medieval roots, with knights, damsels and troubadours flooding the cobblestone streets of the city.
Demonstrations held by medieval organizations, parades, street theatres and concerts form the basis of this festival, but the atmosphere is only completed by the thousands of enthusiasts coming from all around the country to celebrate the long gone middle ages.
