Tourist Attractions – The Blue Lake

Despite its name, what is representative of the Blue Lake is not necessarily its colour, but by the fact that it switches shade with the light and the people swimming here.

The Blue Lake is found 3 km away from Baia Sprie and was formed through the falling of a mine gallery which was, in time, flooded with rainwater. The total surface of the lake is half a hectare and has an almost circular contour, the lake being situated on the slope of a hill, in the south-western area.

When you approach the lake for the first time, you feel as if you were stepping on the mouth of a volcano and, according to the latest official measurements, the lake measures almost 50 meters from one shore to another and is only 4 meters deep. There are plenty stories and legends related to the mythical hidden depths of the lake and to the hypothesis that the lake is somehow connected to the Black Sea through the underground galleries; funny, indeed, but far from the truth.

What is true about the Blue Lake is that it does change its colour. When the mine is flooded, the water takes a green-blue colour – thanks to the sulphides in the water – but when there are many people bathing in the green water, it becomes a deeper shade of blue.

The lake is become increasingly popular for those interested in a bit of romanticism, and the guest houses around are”greed” (environmental friendly, that is to say). The locals have chosen to keep the lake and the place in a natural state, ideal both for those seeking to explore the relief by ATV or on food and for people craving for a moment of quiet with their family.

Another attraction in the area is the Potter`s House (Casa Olarului), which offers lodgings in a rustic environment as well as pottery demonstrations.

The Blue Lake is located in Maramures County and is accessible by car. Rent a car from us.
