The beauties of Maramures have long been chanted by Romanian poets and… foreign tourism experts. Today, we suggest stopping by Baia Mare, a few tourist attractions being the subject of our article.
But first, let’s remember that Baia Mare used to be an important medieval center, first mentioned in the year 1142 by King Geza II, then attested in a 1329 document as Rivului Dominarum. In the 1700s, the town became involved in the tumultuous Curut War and in 1889, “Gutinul” is published here, the first Romanian language issue.

The Liberty Square (Piata Libertatii), the big town center, dates from the 14th century. The oldest preserved house here, Elisabeta House, dates back to the years 1440, a relic of a castle built by Iancu de Hunedoara and his wife, Elisabeta.
The History and Archeology Museum Baia Mare dates from the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the museum counts some 70.000 pieces, organized in four main collections: art, library, history and archeology, natural sciences.
Built on Florilor Hill, the Village Museum in Baia Mare exhibits a series of lovely traditional houses from the four main areas in Maramures: Tara Lapusului, Tara Chioarului, Tara Maramuresului si Tara Codrului. And not just that: the complex also includes a school, a small church and constructions destined to raising animals.
Built at the end of the 18th century, the Vulturul Negru Inn used to be the biggest “hotel” in town, being able to host simple people as well as personalities, entertaining them with play rooms (billiards, bowling), a tavern and ballrooms. In 1925, the inn became the town hall headquarter and from 1950 on, the town’s Court is hosted here.
